Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic Announces Resignation to Run for Prime Minister

Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Sunday that he would resign from his position to run for prime minister in the upcoming snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October. Vucic made the announcement from the presidential palace in Belgrade, stating, "I am resigning as president." He added, "Tomorrow morning I will hand over my duties to the parliament speaker," and remarked, "This is the last evening for me in this building." Vucic expressed his commitment to serving the country, saying, "I served you faithfully. I served all of you, and our homeland Serbia, honourably and honestly throughout my presidential term. The fight is only beginning." Vucic is prohibited by the Serbian Constitution from seeking a third term and was serving his second term, which was set to end in May 2027. The 56-year-old has been a significant figure in Serbian politics for over a decade, with a background in Serbian nationalism and a previous role as a minister under Slobodan Milosevic. Earlier in September, he called for snap elections, citing "major turbulence on the domestic political scene." This turbulence was linked to a tragedy in Novi Sad, where a newly reconstructed railway station awning collapsed, resulting in 16 fatalities. The incident sparked nationwide protests demanding accountability and transparency, leading to the arrest or resignation of several officials, including two ministers.
