Five Men Arrested on Suspicion of Terrorism Offenses Near U.K. Air Base

<p>British police reported the arrest of five men on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses near an air base utilized by the U.S. Air Force for operations in Iran.</p><p>Officials declared a major incident and established roadblocks overnight near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.</p><p>Police received a call at approximately 12:45 a.m. local time on Sunday regarding "three suspicious vehicles" that appeared to be heading towards the air base, which is operated by the U.S. 501st Combat Support Wing and the 420th Air Base Squadron, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.</p><ul><li>Armed officers responded to the situation and arrested the men in the Whelford area on suspicion of committing offenses under the Explosives Act. They were also arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, in violation of section 5 of the Terrorism Act, as noted in the statement.</li></ul>
