Northern Ireland court permits Orange Order march through Catholic area

Northern Ireland’s High Court has allowed the Protestant Orange Order to march through the predominantly Catholic area of Garvaghy Road in Portadown for the first time in 28 years. This decision comes after the Court of Appeal overturned a temporary injunction that had been granted to residents seeking to block the parade. Hundreds of protesters gathered early on Sunday morning to demonstrate against the ruling. Among the crowd were Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald, who expressed their opposition to the march. McDonald described the situation as 'madness' and called for intervention from the British government and police to halt the parade. Police issued warnings to protesters that participation in the demonstration could be considered a criminal offense. The Orange Order, which is associated with unionism, had a limited procession approved by the Parades Commission, which imposed restrictions including a cap on participants and a requirement for the march to conclude by 9:30 AM (08:30 GMT). The ongoing dispute over the Drumcree parade and Garvaghy Road has historical roots in the conflict known as the Troubles, which centered on Northern Ireland's political status and has seen significant tensions and violence in the past.
