Power Outages Reported in New Jersey and New York Due to Nor'easter

Tens of thousands are without power in New Jersey and New York as a nor’easter impacts the Mid-Atlantic region. The storm, which began affecting the area on Friday evening, is expected to bring coastal flooding, high wind gusts, and rip currents. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill declared a State of Emergency for Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Salem counties on Friday in anticipation of the storm's arrival. She stated, "Starting tonight, the storm is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain, and significant coastal flooding, with these eight counties facing the greatest risk. I urge all New Jerseyans to take this storm seriously, stay alert, and follow local guidance. We’re prepared and will keep you updated as conditions develop." As of 10 am ET, over 37,000 customers in New Jersey were experiencing power outages, with Ocean County reporting over 7,000 outages. In New York, nearly 28,000 customers were without power, with Suffolk County reporting the highest concentration at over 11,000 outages. Videos from the East Coast depict severe conditions, particularly in New Jersey, where vehicles are reported to be submerged. The National Weather Service (NWS) indicated that the storm is not expected to weaken until Sunday night, with flooding anticipated from northern New Jersey to southern New England. The NWS warned of major coastal flooding during multiple high tide cycles through the weekend, stating, "Prepare immediately for significant inundation in low-lying areas near the shore, including roads underwater and impacts to homes and businesses. Moreover, large breaking waves will continue to generate strong rip currents, beach erosion, road closures, and property damage for the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic into Southern New England through Monday."
