Los Angeles mayoral candidates Nithya Raman and Karen Bass have reported their fundraising totals ahead of the upcoming election. According to the latest filings, Bass has raised approximately $2.51 million in direct contributions and matching funds, while Raman has raised slightly more at $2.53 million. Both candidates have received at least $1 million in matching funds from the city’s program, which provides candidates with $6 in taxpayer money for every $1 they receive from local supporters.
Raman has more cash on hand, with $1.9 million compared to Bass’s nearly $1.2 million, according to financial records. A recent poll indicated that Raman is leading Bass 39% to 28%, although Bass’s team has dismissed this poll as an outlier.
Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently hosted Raman at his Santa Monica office, providing her access to various Hollywood, business, and civic leaders, although he has not endorsed her. Both candidates are emphasizing their fundraising totals as indicators of their campaign strength. Raman stated, “Mayor Bass has the backing of the political establishment and corporations, but our campaign is powered by an extraordinary wave of grassroots support from Angelenos who are ready to change the direction of our city.”
Bass’s campaign chief strategist, Julie C. Rodriguez, responded by highlighting the mayor’s efforts, including advertising to contrast Bass’s policies with Raman’s positions. Additionally, outside groups are financially supporting both candidates, with Raman receiving backing from the Western States Regional Council of Carpenters and hedge fund manager Aaron Sosnick, totaling $6 million. The Los Angeles Police Protective League and Airbnb have spent at least $4.55 million to support Bass.
