Human Smuggling Operations Reported in Newport Beach, California

Concerns are rising regarding human smuggling operations utilizing water routes to access affluent California coastal areas, including Newport Beach. A boat carrying a group of suspected migrants landed at a private dock in Newport Harbor on Saturday, after which the individuals reportedly left the scene in two vehicles. A resident observed the men entering the cars and informed a federal agent about the incident. Bill Essayli, First Assistant US Attorney for the Central District of California, expressed that the situation has raised alarms among law enforcement, noting an increase in boats arriving with illegal immigrants. He stated, "The increase in these boats showing up on our shores with illegal immigrants is concerning. It’s clearly a sign the border is sealed tight, no one is getting through on foot. So now they’re resorting to using boats to get to our shores. It’s an expensive and dangerous method but they’re obviously growing desperate." Both the US Coast Guard and US Customs and Border Protection are aware of the threat and are working to address it. Investigators are seeking video evidence of the incident, with only one surveillance clip currently available. Residents have called for increased security measures at the harbor to prevent such landings, with some expressing concern over the vulnerability of private docks. Katie Zacharia, a former spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, attributed the situation to California's policies, stating that increased border security has pushed smugglers to use maritime routes. A recent report indicated that a witness saw approximately 12 individuals disembark from a small boat in Newport Beach Harbor, prompting a response from Customs and Border Protection, which seized the abandoned vessel. Federal officials noted that human traffickers often collaborate with organized crime in Mexico to facilitate illegal migration, and as border security tightens, maritime smuggling is on the rise. Newport Beach City Council member Erik Weigand highlighted the potential for pleasure craft traffic to serve as cover for smugglers and is advocating for the installation of security cameras at the harbor entrance to enhance monitoring efforts.
