Cruz emphasizes importance of AI competition with China for U.S. economy

<p>Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, stated that the competition between the United States and China in artificial intelligence (AI) is a critical economic issue as midterm elections approach. Cruz, who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee, expressed concerns about what he described as a coordinated propaganda effort against U.S. data centers, which he believes is influenced by foreign interests.</p><p>In an interview with Fox News Digital, Cruz noted that the recent opposition to data centers is being driven by a well-funded campaign aimed at convincing Americans to rely on Chinese AI instead of developing domestic capabilities. He compared this situation to past foreign influences on U.S. energy policy, specifically referencing Middle Eastern funding of anti-fracking movements.</p><p>Cruz highlighted that direct funding from the Chinese government into U.S. data center policies has not been disclosed. However, he mentioned that OpenAI recently banned ChatGPT accounts believed to be linked to China, which were allegedly involved in spreading misinformation about the impact of data centers on electricity costs.</p><p>Cruz characterized the effort to ensure the U.S. wins the AI race as “the single most important economic question facing America today.” He expressed concerns that if China prevails, AI would reflect the values of the Chinese Communist Party, focusing on control and surveillance, whereas he wants American values such as free speech and individualism to be represented in AI.</p><p>Cruz criticized the Democratic Party's stance on AI and data centers, claiming it aligns with the interests of major industry players who seek exemptions from antitrust laws. He associated this position with leftist ideology and the effective altruism movement, suggesting that it represents a push for control over AI development.</p><p>Parker Thayer, an investigative researcher at the Capital Research Center, noted that effective altruism is linked to what he termed the “AI doomerism movement.” Cruz pointed to financial backers of effective altruism, including Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and his wife Cari Tuna, who have committed significant funding to AI safety and policy advocacy.</p><p>Coefficient Giving, the organization founded by Moskovitz and Tuna, has pledged substantial financial support for AI initiatives, with plans to commit over $1 billion to AI policy advocacy by 2026.</p>
