Trump Declines to Collaborate with China on AI Development

United States President Donald Trump stated that the country will not cooperate with China on artificial intelligence (AI) despite increasing calls for regulation. On Saturday, as he left the White House, Trump told reporters that the US 'is not going to be putting on brakes' for AI, even as lawmakers and executives from major tech firms expressed concerns about its potential risks to humanity. He compared these fears to other issues he has labeled as 'hoaxes', such as climate change and the investigation into alleged collusion with Russian operatives during his 2016 campaign. Trump remarked, 'When they wanna put on brakes, it’s just like everybody’s going to be dead. You’re all supposed to be dead now, because of global warming. It’s like Russia, Russia, Russia hoax. All of these different hoaxes.' He emphasized the importance of maintaining US leadership in AI, stating, 'I would rather not integrate, because we’re leading by a lot.' During a recent summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump indicated that discussions about AI were limited. Although US lawmakers and experts hoped for a significant agreement on AI during the meeting, it did not occur. The White House announced that the US and China agreed to establish a 'bilateral communication channel' for AI incidents, but there was no immediate response from Beijing. Trump also mentioned that he prefers to refer to AI as 'super intelligence', a term that the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted Xi seemed to appreciate. Xi has advocated for the development of AI under human control, contrasting with Trump's more assertive stance.
