The White House announced that the United States and China have agreed to establish a "bilateral communication channel" for artificial intelligence (AI) incidents following a summit in Washington, DC. US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed various topics, including AI, trade, and the conflict in Iran during their three-day state visit. They confirmed plans to meet for additional international summits in China and the US later this year.
The White House's statement indicated that the communication channel aims to address AI incidents, although there was no immediate response from Beijing. The summit, described by Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher as lacking significant breakthroughs, included a ceremonial aspect that overshadowed substantive progress. The two nations agreed to extend a trade truce set to expire in November, postponing the deadline to January to allow for further discussions.
Trump expressed that the visit had strengthened his relationship with Xi, which he believes will be beneficial for the US in the long term. He stated, "We’ve had a tremendous visit from two spectacular people, and we really enjoyed it, and I think we’ve made tremendous strides."
Xi emphasized the need for both countries to engage in "healthy competition" in AI, highlighting their shared responsibility to manage AI for positive outcomes. He also sought assurances for fair treatment in future negotiations and outlined his expectations for upcoming discussions.
Additionally, Xi urged Trump to address the Taiwan issue carefully and discussed various global matters, including the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula. The White House reported that China agreed to import at least 10 million metric tonnes of US coal in the 2027-2028 period, along with favorable tariffs on $30 billion of "non-sensitive goods" between the two nations. The visit included a state banquet, a military parade, and a tour of the National Archives, where the leaders viewed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Trump remarked on the historical longevity of the US compared to China.
The two leaders are scheduled to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 in Miami in December. Fisher noted that the continuation of dialogue was a significant outcome for both sides.
