Los Angeles Fourth of July Parade Canceled Due to Budget Cuts

The Fourth of July parade in Los Angeles has been canceled, with organizers attributing the decision to budget cuts from Mayor Karen Bass' office. In a letter released on Thursday, the Sunland/Tujunga/Shadow Hills Rotary Club stated that the city no longer provides services for free for events protected under the First Amendment, requiring sponsoring organizations to cover costs for city services necessary for a safe event. The estimated cost for barricades, signage, and other items was reported to be nearly $20,000, which is over four times the average budget for the parade. The club expressed sadness over the cancellation and indicated a desire to work with the city to host the parade in the future. Lydia Grant, president of the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council, described the situation as shocking and expressed frustration over delays in communication with the mayor's office. She also noted that while city festivals are being canceled, political protests continue to receive city support. This announcement follows a similar cancellation in Rutland, Massachusetts, due to a lack of adequate public safety staffing.
