New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell Resigns Amid Sexual Harassment Investigation

New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell has resigned following a sexual harassment investigation that substantiated claims against him. Governor Mikie Sherrill announced Caldwell's resignation on Friday, a day after calling for him to step down due to violations of state policy and ethical lapses. Caldwell, who previously served as president of Centenary University, faced accusations of making inappropriate comments to an aide and attempting to secure a promotion for his girlfriend. In an interview, Caldwell stated that he was not resigning because of the allegations but to avoid being a distraction to the administration. He expressed support for Sherrill and her administration. Sherrill emphasized the importance of ethical standards within her administration and stated that anyone violating these standards would be held accountable. Caldwell attributed the investigation to racial bias, claiming that false accusations against people of color are common in the current political climate. The investigation was initiated by an anonymous complaint in May and was led by former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino. The report detailed various instances of Caldwell allegedly abusing his position, including obtaining tickets for events without payment and making inappropriate advances towards staff members. Caldwell's attorney has denied some of the allegations. Under New Jersey law, the state Legislature is responsible for removing lieutenant governors through impeachment.
