<p class="wp-block-paragraph">President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will meet with executives of top AI companies at the White House on Tuesday, September 29, as confirmed by the <em>Washington Examiner</em>.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The meeting highlights the pressure on Republicans to regulate the AI industry ahead of the November midterm elections. Johnson has stated that the House will not rush into regulating AI models, rejecting what he termed “stupid knee-jerk reaction prescriptions.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A White House official confirmed the meeting but did not disclose the names of other attendees. Johnson has expressed a desire for Trump and tech CEOs to convene privately to discuss the federal government's role in AI regulation.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Several tech CEOs, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, attended a state dinner at the White House on Thursday night in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump and leading Republicans have argued that excessive regulation of artificial intelligence could undermine U.S. national security and allow China to gain an advantage in AI development. Johnson emphasized the importance of maintaining the U.S. edge in AI, stating, “We cannot have a moratorium on the development of AI, OK, because then we will lose our edge to China, and that has serious national security implications for every American family.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite this, advocates for regulation have raised concerns about the rapid advancement of AI technologies. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for a global slowdown in AI frontier model development, following a resignation from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who warned that AI could pose significant risks.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Trump has referred to artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence” in an effort to counter calls for regulation. In a post on Truth Social, he mentioned a productive meeting with President Xi and suggested that the term “Super Intelligence” is more accurate than “Artificial Intelligence.”</p>
