Miss Jamaica Gabrielle Henry has filed a lawsuit against the Miss Universe organization following a stage fall that resulted in a severe brain injury. The lawsuit was filed on Monday in Delaware Superior Court, nearly a year after the incident occurred during the Miss Universe preliminary rounds in Thailand in November 2025.
Henry, who is a doctor, reported that she fell through an unmarked opening in the stage that was approximately five feet deep. According to the lawsuit, she was blinded by intense lighting when she fell into the opening, which contained concrete and lighting equipment. The fall caused her to lose consciousness and resulted in a traumatic brain injury, including multiple brain bleeds.
In an essay published by People, Henry stated, "I fell into an unguarded hole, sustaining a traumatic brain injury that permanently altered the course of my life. All at once, a beautiful moment became a shattered dream." She described the recovery process as challenging, likening it to an out-of-body experience.
Henry spent several months in hospitals in Bangkok and Jamaica from November 2025 to March 2026. The injuries she sustained prevented her from completing her residency and have impacted her career in ophthalmology. She expressed the emotional toll of her situation, stating, "As an ophthalmologist, being in the hospital was also a particularly painful reminder of what I had lost on the way down during my fall."
The lawsuit alleges negligence, premises liability, and infliction of emotional distress against the Miss Universe organization and the Thai pageant producer Miss Grand International. Henry claims that the stage opening was not adequately protected, stating, "This opening was not barricaded, illuminated, nor did it have a sign," and noted that contestants had raised concerns about safety markers during rehearsals and the live broadcast.
Initially, Miss Universe officials described Henry’s injuries as minor, but later acknowledged the seriousness of the fall and stated they took full responsibility, including covering her medical expenses. Henry made her first public appearance since the fall at a charity event in Atlanta in May and returned to the stage in August to crown her successor, Miss Jamaica 2026 Nevaeh Allen. In her essay, she reflected on her journey, stating, "As pageant queens, we are tasked with lifting others up. Throughout my journey, I learned to let others do the lifting. I continue to stand firm in my belief that the true reason for my fall, the meaning behind it all, will reveal itself somehow."
