Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has reaffirmed his endorsement of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, despite reports of Platner exchanging sexual texts with multiple women after his marriage two years ago. Platner's campaign confirmed the exchanges to Politico following a report from The Wall Street Journal, which stated that his wife, Amy Gertner, informed a campaign aide about the texts as they assessed potential political liabilities. Gertner reportedly discovered the messages months after their marriage in 2024.
Sanders emphasized the importance of focusing on significant issues affecting working people, stating, "Sixty percent of our people are living paycheck to paycheck. People can't afford healthcare. They can't afford groceries. They can’t afford to fill up their gas tanks." He noted that substantial funding is expected to be spent against Platner in the upcoming election.
When asked if he was reconsidering his endorsement, Sanders replied, "certainly not," and expressed confidence in Platner's relationship with his wife, stating, "my understanding is that his wife, Amy, who I've met, indicated they love each other." He urged a focus on the issues facing Americans rather than personal matters. Sanders reiterated his support for Platner, responding positively when pressed by reporters.
Gertner defended her husband's campaign, expressing frustration with media coverage of the situation and highlighting the challenges of being newly married while managing infertility and a Senate campaign.
