Residents of Bensonhurst Express Concerns Over New Tree Plantings Affecting Feng Shui

Residents in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, have raised concerns about a city initiative to plant new trees as part of the Urban Forest Plan. They argue that the placement of at least seven new tree beds, which will be located directly in front of homes, could disrupt the area's Feng Shui, potentially blocking good energy and inviting negative influences. Tina Tam, a local resident, stated, "This is our superstition," emphasizing the importance of the entrance to their homes. The city has reported that 18,261 trees have been planted in fiscal year 2026, the highest number since 2016, as part of efforts to increase green space and reduce heat. The selection of tree locations was based on factors such as pedestrian accessibility and existing infrastructure. Feng Shui expert RD Chin noted that while trees can enhance positive energy, their placement is crucial. Residents have sought assistance from City Councilmember Susan Zhuang to address their concerns regarding the tree locations. Zhuang expressed a commitment to finding a solution that respects the community's cultural values while fulfilling the city's goals for urban greening. A spokesperson for the Parks Department stated they are in communication with Zhuang to address the residents' concerns while continuing the tree planting initiative.
