<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overton, who is currently a domestic policy adviser to Trump, underwent approximately two hours of questioning from the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Senators criticized her for providing lengthy responses to straightforward yes-or-no questions, a tactic they noted was used to prolong the questioning process.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) remarked, “You’ve done a pretty good job of avoiding answering questions so far.” Overton frequently referenced the technical definitions of her potential role as commissioner instead of sharing her personal views on significant issues.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Several senators inquired about the FDA’s upcoming safety study on the abortion pill mifepristone and whether she would advocate for reinstating in-person screening requirements for physicians who dispense the drug. Overton had previously authored a policy paper at the America First Policy Institute, stating that telemedicine access for abortion poses risks for women, but she did not disclose her personal stance on abortion during the hearing.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Patty Murray (D-WA) asked Overton if she believed mifepristone is safe for women, she refrained from offering her professional opinion as a physician and instead reiterated her potential responsibilities should she be confirmed. “As the nominee for the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, my job would be to abide by the statutory standards set out for safety and efficacy,” Overton stated.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chairman Bill Cassidy (R-LA) also received a technical response when he asked Overton about the safety of vaccines, including the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, which Trump previously described as “potentially quite lethal.” Overton did not directly contradict the president but affirmed that the MMR vaccine is safe and effective according to FDA standards, stating, “Every vaccine on the U.S. market right now is safe and effective according to the FDA.”</p>
