The Beach Boys cancel several concerts one day before scheduled performances

The Beach Boys have canceled several concerts just one day before they were set to return to touring after a two-month break. The group was scheduled to perform on Thursday at the Big E Arena in West Springfield, Massachusetts, followed by a show at the Univest Performance Center in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, on Friday, and another performance at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, two days later. All three shows have been canceled, with both the Univest Performance Center and Alabama Theatre citing 'circumstances beyond the control' of the venues for the cancellations. These cancellations are notable as they mark the first scheduled performances after the band announced in July that it would take a 'short break' from touring following its last show on July 18. The next concert currently listed on the Beach Boys' official website is on October 9 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois, followed by shows in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Nashville, Tennessee. In July, frontman Mike Love, the only original member still touring with the band, announced that the group would temporarily step away from the road, postponing nearly 30 summer shows scheduled between July 23 and September 3. Love stated, 'Playing for you is the highlight of our summer every year — especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States while saluting the 60th Anniversary of Pet Sounds.' He added that they would take a short break to recharge before resuming their tour in September. Love, 85, has publicly discussed health and personal challenges this year, including the death of his sister, Maureen, and his recovery from bronchitis and COVID-19, which he said had taken an 'emotional and physical toll' on him. He expressed his commitment to the audience, stating, 'I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else than with our audience. For me, our audience is the medicine, and the music is the cure.' This follows the death of Brian Wilson, the group’s co-founder, who passed away at 82 from respiratory arrest last June. Original drummer Dennis Wilson died in 1983, and original guitarist Carl Wilson died in 1998 after battling lung cancer. Keyboardist Bruce Johnston, who had performed with the group for six decades, left in March. The Beach Boys are known for defining the Southern California surf-rock sound of the 1960s, earning four Grammy nominations and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
