A wanted man carrying a machete was apprehended by police during an undercover operation in Poplar, east London. Roy Hallissey had been evading law enforcement despite frequently visiting a local market. Officers were aware that Hallissey traveled to the area on a powerful electric bike and had avoided the market when he noticed police presence.
To locate him, two Metropolitan Police officers disguised themselves; one posed as a street cleaner and the other as a takeaway delivery worker. They approached Hallissey from different directions, surprising him and preventing his escape.
Upon searching him, officers found a large machete concealed around his waist. Hallissey was already wanted for a previous stabbing conviction and had failed to appear in court for sentencing. He was also wanted for an alleged assault on an emergency worker and had breached a criminal behavior order that prohibited him from being in the Poplar area.
Inspector Frank Hartley from the neighborhood team stated that Hallissey's possession of a dangerous weapon could have led to serious violence. He emphasized the Metropolitan Police's commitment to identifying and prosecuting wanted offenders to protect communities. Hallissey was taken to Snaresbrook Crown Court on May 29, where he admitted to multiple offenses, including possessing a bladed article and breaching his criminal behavior order. He is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on October 7.
