FBI Investigates Claims of Data Breach by Hacker Group ShinyHunters

<p>The FBI is investigating claims from the hacker group ShinyHunters that personal data of thousands of current and former employees was stolen after exploiting a vulnerability on the agency's jobs website.</p><p>On September 22, 2026, 404 Media reported that ShinyHunters compromised the site, FBIJobs.gov, and displayed a message stating, “THIS SITE HAS BEEN SEIZED BY SHINYHUNTERS.”</p><p>ShinyHunters claimed that approximately two to three terabytes of data were taken, which includes names of current and former agents, applicants, home addresses, phone numbers, names of spouses, certain medical information, and other data, as reported to The New York Times. While none of the data has been leaked yet, Bloomberg noted that it could potentially be used to retaliate against agents. A sample reportedly includes sensitive professional information related to FBI employees' work, such as counter-intelligence efforts concerning China, Russia, and Iran, as well as operations against street gangs.</p>
