California murder suspect arrested multiple times before fatal shooting incident

<p>A California murder suspect, Derek Spencer, 44, was arrested three times within a two-week period and released each time before allegedly killing 76-year-old Cheryl Macy and engaging in a shootout with law enforcement. Prosecutors attempted to keep Spencer in custody after he allegedly assaulted a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy, but he posted bail and was released.</p><p>Spencer's crime spree reportedly began on September 3, when he was arrested for felony vandalism, resisting arrest, and assaulting a deputy with a deadly weapon. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office filed charges on September 8, but a judge set bail, allowing Spencer to be released on September 11.</p><p>Following his release, Spencer was arrested again on September 13 for burglary and released the next day. He was arrested once more on September 15 for vehicle theft and released again on September 17. By September 18, he failed to appear for a court hearing related to the deputy assault, leading to a warrant for his arrest.</p><p>On September 19, Spencer allegedly stole another vehicle and fired at a moving vehicle in El Dorado County. The following day, Placer County deputies began searching for him after he reportedly pointed a gun at victims. During the manhunt, Macy was found shot to death in her home, and investigators believe Spencer killed her before fleeing into the forest.</p><p>On September 23, Spencer was located by a California Highway Patrol aircraft and engaged in a standoff with deputies, during which he opened fire. He was ultimately killed by deputies during the confrontation. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office described the incident as a dangerous crime spree that resulted in the loss of an innocent life.</p><p>The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office criticized California’s bail system, citing the recent Kowalczyk decision, which they argue limits judges' ability to detain repeat offenders. They called for changes to prioritize victims in bail considerations.</p><p>Macy, who worked for the Placer County District Attorney’s Office from 2006 to 2020, was remembered by her colleagues as a cherished member of the community. Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire expressed condolences and called for accountability in the wake of her death.</p><p>The investigation into the shooting and Macy’s death is ongoing.</p>
