Putin Faces Challenges as Ukraine Conflict Enters Fifth Year

Margus Tsahkna, Estonia's foreign minister, stated that Putin is no longer in a "secure" position, noting a shift in rhetoric around the war.</p><p>During an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, Tsahkna remarked, "What we see around Putin is more concerts. Nobody around Putin... is talking about victory anymore," which he described as a "good sign." Estonia, a NATO member and ally of Ukraine, has provided approximately $1.2 billion in aid to Ukraine since the onset of the conflict.</p><p>Tsahkna also commented on former U.S. President Donald Trump's role, suggesting that Putin has leveraged Trump's influence to gain time and pressure Ukraine. He emphasized the need for increased support for Ukraine against Russia.</p><p>In Russia, Putin is reportedly dealing with a fuel crisis as Ukrainian drone strikes target Russian oil refineries, leading to supply shortages. Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to halt attacks on Russian diesel infrastructure, citing global energy supply strains due to ongoing conflicts.</p><p>Despite Trump's appeals, Zelensky has continued strikes, resulting in fuel rationing in several Russian regions amid shortages of gasoline and diesel. This situation adds to the Kremlin's challenges, including rising food prices outpacing inflation.</p><p>On September 22, Trump met with Zelensky at the United Nations, discussing efforts to resolve the conflict. Trump stated, "We’re working very closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, and we will get that one done," predicting a swift agreement.</p><p>The following day, Russian forces conducted a drone attack in Kyiv, causing infrastructure damage and resulting in at least two fatalities. Shortly thereafter, the Trump administration announced an invitation for Putin to attend the December G20 summit in Miami, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressing hope for Putin's participation.</p><p>The Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to inquiries regarding Putin's potential attendance at the summit.</p>
