Zelenskyy Calls for Continued Economic Pressure on Russia at UN General Assembly

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations General Assembly, urging world leaders to maintain economic pressure on Russia to hinder its military efforts in Ukraine. He attributed the ongoing conflict to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, "For nearly five years now, Russia’s generals have tried to carry out Putin’s crazy war," and emphasized that no one supports the war except for Putin. Zelenskyy reported that Russia has lost 248,000 soldiers in the past eight months and has captured only about 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of Ukrainian territory this year. He remarked, "Putin spent 248 people for every kilometer. Does anyone still think he is smart?" He highlighted the human cost of the war, saying, "These numbers are not just statistics. This is about people." Zelenskyy expressed concern that Russia would escalate its bombing campaign in the coming months and noted that Ukrainians are preparing for a difficult winter. He stated, "Ukrainians understand that this winter could be very harsh for us, but in response we will have no choice but to make it harsh for Russia too." He also mentioned Ukraine's recent attacks on Russian facilities, including an operation targeting gas condensate facilities over 3,000 kilometers (1,865 miles) from Ukraine's border. In response to the conflict, US President Donald Trump has advocated for an “energy ceasefire” between the two countries, attributing rising fuel prices to the war. Zelenskyy reiterated the need for sustained economic pressure on Russia, stating that the revenue from trade prolongs the war. He noted that last week, Trump signed a sanctions package against Russia, which received bipartisan support in Congress. Additionally, Zelenskyy claimed that nationals from 47 countries are fighting alongside Russia, questioning why foreign soldiers should be involved in the conflict. In contrast, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow is open to negotiating a lasting peace but will not agree to a temporary pause in hostilities. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that both Russia and Ukraine have shown interest in a limited ceasefire focused on grain shipments and energy sectors.
