Sheriff's Deputy Rescues Driver from Burning Vehicle After High-Speed Chase

<p>A sheriff's deputy rescued a man from his burning vehicle following a high-speed chase that concluded in a crash. The incident occurred in Kingston, Washington, around 11:30 p.m. on Monday.</p><p>According to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office, the deputy observed the suspect driving approximately 20 miles per hour over the speed limit on State Highway 104. The driver did not stop when signaled and accelerated to speeds of 111 miles per hour.</p><p>After losing sight of the suspect, the deputy noticed tire marks and smoke, leading him to the scene where the SUV had crashed into a yard, colliding with a tractor and igniting a fire.</p><p>Body camera footage shows the deputy attempting to extract the man through the driver's side window by breaking it with his flashlight. When the man indicated he could not exit that way, the deputy shifted to the passenger side, repeatedly striking the handle with his flashlight as flames rose from the engine.</p><p>A Port Gamble police officer arrived with a fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire, allowing the deputy to pull the man from the wreckage. North Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews subsequently airlifted the man to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.</p><p>The man faces two charges: attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving. His identity has not been disclosed by authorities.</p>
