VfL Wolfsburg and Christian Eriksen mutually terminate contract

VfL Wolfsburg and midfielder Christian Eriksen have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, which was originally set to run until June 2027. The announcement was made on Wednesday. Eriksen, 34, has been recovering from a collapse that occurred during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine in June. He previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match against Finland in the 2021 European Championship, which led to a six-month absence from the sport. Eriksen has since played with a pacemaker. In July, he indicated his intention to return to Denmark for rehabilitation. In a statement, Eriksen expressed his desire to be close to his family and noted, "I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together." He reflected on his time at Wolfsburg, mentioning both highs and lows, and expressed confidence in the club's future. Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent a year ago, making 34 appearances, scoring three goals, and providing ten assists. Dieter Hecking, Wolfsburg's Managing Director of Sport, confirmed that the club honored Eriksen’s request to terminate the contract, acknowledging his impact during his time at the club. Eriksen has also played for Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Manchester United.
