Attorneys for Nick Reiner, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, are arguing that he should have access to a trust fund established for him as a child. They claim a significant portion of the trust, valued at approximately $1.6 million, consists of funds inherited from his grandfather, Carl Reiner, rather than his parents. Nick Reiner has been incarcerated at Twin Towers Correctional Facility for nearly a year, facing two counts of murder in the deaths of his parents. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include special circumstances of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait.
The trustee of the trust cites California's Slayer Statute, which prevents individuals who unlawfully kill another from benefiting financially from that death, as a reason for withholding the funds. However, Nick's lawyers argue that the statute does not apply in this case, as a substantial portion of the trust was left to him by his grandfather, who died in June 2020, and not his parents. They contend that the funds should be considered Nick's personal assets and should be released from the trust.
Nick's attorneys also highlighted that he has been unable to access any funds for basic needs while in custody. The dispute over the trust has reportedly caused a rift within the Reiner family, with Nick's siblings refusing to support his legal defense financially. They have expressed concerns about allowing him to use the trust for his defense against the murder charges.
Nick's legal team asserts that the ongoing legal battle over the trust is impacting his ability to mount an effective defense, as he has not been able to pay for legal counsel and expert witnesses since January 2026. The case continues to develop as Nick awaits trial, with the potential for life imprisonment if convicted.
