The ADAC motoring association has stated that a regulation allowing gas stations to raise fuel prices only once a day, at noon, has not benefited consumers. The association noted that entry-level jobs are becoming scarcer, complicating the situation for new job seekers.
On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) reported that between May and mid-September, 248 individuals died in drowning incidents in Germany, an increase of 12 compared to the same period last year. June recorded the highest number of drownings, with 101 fatalities, marking the most since 2003. However, the total number of drowning deaths this year stands at 320, slightly lower than last year's figure of 328. The DLRG highlighted that 88 young individuals aged 11 to 30 drowned this year, which is 15 more than in all of 2025, with over 90% of these victims being male. The organization emphasized the need for improved education about water safety and swimming instruction in schools.
The ADAC criticized the once-a-day price change rule, which was implemented on April 1, stating it has not led to lower prices. While the rule reduced the frequency of price changes, it resulted in a wider gap between the highest and lowest prices. Motorists purchasing gas shortly after noon, when prices typically rise, are facing higher costs. An economic research institute, ZEW, reported that fuel prices have increased on average since the rule's introduction, with prices generally rising after noon and being lower in the morning.
As of Thursday, average gas prices in Germany reached a record high of €2.308 per liter for super E10 and €2.471 per liter for diesel, equivalent to $9.98 and $10.69 per US gallon, respectively. The ADAC welcomed the government's planned temporary reduction in the energy tax, set to take effect on October 1, as a more effective measure to alleviate costs for motorists. The ongoing high gas prices, largely attributed to the conflict in the Middle East, remain a significant concern in Germany.
