Earl Spencer has issued an apology to Piers Morgan regarding statements made in his new book, 'Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.' Morgan has threatened legal action against Spencer for what he describes as 'fabricated inaccuracies' and 'examples of brazen falsity' in the book, which has been serialized by the Daily Mail.
In the book, Spencer claims that Morgan 'snarled with annoyance' when informed he was not invited to Princess Diana's funeral. This anecdote is part of Spencer's account of his decision to uninvite all national newspaper editors from the funeral, including Morgan, who was the editor of the Mirror at the time. Spencer also suggested that Morgan might feel guilt over the publication of photographs of Diana taken with hidden cameras four years earlier. However, the photos, which depicted Diana in a leotard at the gym, were published in the Sunday Mirror in 1993, while Morgan was still working at The Sun, and he did not become editor of the Mirror until 1995.
During his YouTube show, 'Piers Morgan Uncensored,' Morgan read an excerpt from Spencer's book, stating, 'The only one who sounded surly... was Piers Morgan of the Mirror, who snarled with annoyance before he hung up.' He criticized the book for containing inaccuracies that he claims undermine Spencer's credibility. Morgan stated, 'It's all bullshit and very, very easy bullshit for me to prove it,' and indicated that he would pursue legal action to have the alleged inaccuracies removed from the book and seek damages for the harm caused.
Spencer apologized for the error but maintained that his account of Morgan's demeanor during their conversation was accurate. A statement from Spencer clarified that while he stands by his recollection of the conversation, he acknowledges that his assumption regarding Morgan's feelings about the photographs was incorrect. Spencer expressed regret for this mistake.
Morgan reiterated his intention to take legal action against Spencer and his publisher, Penguin, to have the inaccuracies addressed and to seek a donation to the King's Trust as compensation for the damage he claims has been caused. He also criticized Spencer for allegedly adopting a narrative style similar to that of Harry and Meghan, stating, 'I expect there will be many more examples of brazen falsity after what I've uncovered.' Morgan referenced other claims in the book, including alleged comments made by the King regarding Diana, which he stated have been disputed by royal commentators and experts. Spencer has maintained his account of the King's alleged remarks.
