Zelenskyy Discusses Energy Ceasefire with US and UK Leaders Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is prepared for a bilateral "energy ceasefire" with Russia following discussions with US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham in New York City. During a post on Telegram, Zelenskyy warned that Russia is planning a "new massive attack" against Ukraine. The talks, which took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, lasted 40 minutes and focused on efforts to end Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which has been ongoing for five years. Zelenskyy described the discussions as "positive and productive" and emphasized that both the US and Ukraine aim to conclude the conflict before winter. He mentioned that Ukraine is willing to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities if Russia ceases its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. However, he clarified that there was no agreement to unilaterally stop attacks on Russian oil facilities. Trump expressed concern over the damage inflicted by Ukraine on Russia's fuel-processing capabilities, which he noted was affecting global diesel prices. He indicated that the meeting would address the impacts of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. The US president had previously mentioned an agreement to refrain from attacking each other's energy facilities, although strikes resumed shortly after. The Kremlin had shown support for an energy moratorium proposed by the US but called for additional measures regarding Russian energy exports and sanctions. Zelenskyy reiterated that discussions about easing sanctions against Russia are not feasible while Ukraine faces ongoing threats from missile and drone attacks. He reported intelligence indicating that Russia is preparing a significant attack. The renewed call for an energy ceasefire follows escalating long-range attacks by both nations, with Russia targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure and Ukraine conducting strikes on Russian oil facilities. Zelenskyy also discussed the need for a winter air-defense package with Trump, requesting additional Patriot missiles to protect against potential Russian strikes as winter approaches. He noted that the US-Israel conflict and Russia's war with Ukraine have strained global supplies of Patriot missiles. In exchange for Patriots from US stockpiles, Ukraine is considering a future swap of interceptors from a deal with Germany. Burnham, the UK Prime Minister, stated he had urged Trump to support the energy ceasefire and promised further financial assistance to Ukraine for infrastructure.
