Virginia School District Under Investigation for 9/11 Teaching Guidance

<p>America First Legal (AFL) has initiated an investigation into Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia following reports of guidance for teaching the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The guidance advises teachers not to 'center the extremists or the acts of the extremists.'</p><p>The investigation was prompted by a report from Fox News Digital, which highlighted the district's instructions ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The guidance advises educators against linking the 9/11 attacks to Islam or Muslims and emphasizes the need to avoid stigmatizing Muslim and Middle Eastern students.</p><p>AFL senior counsel Ian Prior stated, 'We want to know where this comes from. We want to know who the school is working with to develop these guidances.' The group is examining how FCPS developed the guidance and whether any external organizations were involved, although it has not confirmed any outside participation.</p><p>The six-page FCPS guide, titled '25th Anniversary and Commemoration of 9/11,' was published on August 27 and edited on August 31. It instructs teachers to create 'safe spaces' for Muslim and Middle Eastern students and to prepare for anti-Muslim rhetoric.</p><p>Fairfax County Public Schools did not provide specific answers to inquiries about the authorship and approval of the guidance. Instead, the district referred to a statement from Superintendent Michelle Reid, who condemned the 9/11 attacks and emphasized the district's connection to military families and first responders.</p><p>The statement also mentioned that FCPS was reviewing its materials in response to community feedback, while asserting that 'the actions of terrorists should not define the entirety of any faith, culture, or community.'</p><p>Prior argued that it is possible to teach about the ideology behind the 9/11 attacks without assigning collective responsibility to Muslims. The guidance states that teachers should clarify that al-Qaeda was responsible for the attacks and that its ideology should not be attributed to Islam or Muslims as a whole.</p><p>The guidance encourages teachers to focus on the lives lost and the sacrifices made during the attacks rather than on the attackers themselves. For younger students, it suggests a general introduction to the events of 9/11, while for older students, it provides specific details about the attacks and the number of casualties.</p><p>AFL contends that the district's approach is an attempt to sanitize history. Prior stated that the next steps for AFL will depend on the findings of their investigation.</p>
