Marco Rubio Critiques JD Vance's Stance on Iran War

Vance has been tasked with overseeing negotiations for a provisional peace arrangement with Iran, but these efforts have stalled amid disagreements over reopening the Strait of Hormuz.</p><p>According to reports, Vance opposed military action against Iran before the conflict began, raising concerns during discussions with Trump. The New York Times noted that Vance's objections to the war plans frustrated the president and affected their relationship.</p><p>Maggie Haberman, a White House correspondent for The New York Times, confirmed that Vance's vocal opposition to the war irritated Trump. Despite his private reservations, Vance has maintained a public defense of Trump’s decisions regarding the conflict.</p><p>The war has faced increasing criticism, with a CNN/SSRS poll indicating that 70% of Americans believe it has harmed U.S. interests. Additionally, 76% of respondents stated that the war has not justified the loss of American lives or financial costs, which have exceeded $100 billion, according to Brown University’s Iran War Energy Cost Tracker.</p><p>Vance, who is considered a frontrunner for the 2028 GOP nomination, may face challenges due to the war's unpopularity. Rubio is also viewed as a potential candidate for the same nomination. Neither has officially declared their candidacy, but both have emerged as possible successors to Trump, who has not yet indicated his support for either candidate.</p><p>Vance has downplayed any rivalry with Rubio, referring to him as his “best friend” in the administration. Rubio has also indicated that he would not run for president if Vance decides to enter the race.</p><p>Recent polling from the University of New Hampshire shows Vance's lead over Rubio has diminished significantly, dropping from 46 points in February to just 10 points in July among GOP primary voters.</p>
