<p>Tascha Van Auken, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement in New York City, is facing criticism for her comments regarding the office's mission to organize New Yorkers and develop leaders who could remain influential beyond the current administration. Van Auken, who has a background in organizing for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and leadership in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), spoke about the office's vision during the Urban 20 summit.</p><p>During her remarks, Van Auken stated, "Trying to help organize people, building the knowledge and organizational capacity that let New Yorkers shape outcomes, and developing leaders who we hope will still be leaders long after this administration is over." She emphasized the importance of community organization, saying, "An organized tenant is a protected tenant... Talking to your neighbors is how you find out your problem is not only yours. And that is where organization begins."</p><p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani established the Office of Mass Engagement through Executive Order No. 7 on January 2, his second day in office, aiming to change how New Yorkers participate in government decision-making. He appointed Van Auken to lead the office, recognizing her role in mobilizing over 100,000 volunteers during his mayoral campaign.</p><p>Van Auken’s comments have led to backlash on social media, with critics accusing the administration of using City Hall to build political power. NYC councilwoman Vickie Palladino criticized the DSA's focus on organizing without clear plans to improve conditions, stating, "There is no plan to make things better. The only plan is to become powerful enough that nobody can stop them when they make things worse."</p><p>Others have echoed similar sentiments, with one user claiming, "She is outlining a permanent revolution in NYC. NYC is done."
