Police Investigate Alleged Gang-Rape of Minor in Delhi

Authorities in New Delhi are investigating an alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl that occurred on Monday evening. The incident took place in a park after the girl visited a temple with a male friend. Three men, posing as police officers, reportedly intercepted the pair, with one holding the male friend down while the others assaulted the girl. The men allegedly threatened the duo with arrest if they reported the incident. The police were alerted shortly after the assault and took the girl for a medical examination. One of the accused reportedly fired shots at police during an attempted arrest, injuring an officer's bulletproof vest, before being shot in the leg and apprehended. This incident follows a viral video from Bihar showing a group of men harassing a minor, which has sparked outrage across social media and among political leaders. Delhi is frequently cited as one of the least safe cities for women in India, according to the National Annual Report and Index on Women's Safety 2025. Meanwhile, India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he has engaged with European partners on various issues. The Indian government has also been pressing tech companies like Google and Meta to report child sexual abuse material directly to authorities in India, following concerns about delays in the current reporting system.
