Gary Lineker has expressed criticism of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's management of Manchester United, referring to the club's co-owner as an 'unpleasant human being.' Lineker's remarks were made during an episode of The Rest is Football podcast, where he discussed the challenges facing the club under Ratcliffe's leadership.
Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in Manchester United in February 2024, taking control of football operations. However, there has been growing dissatisfaction among fans due to poor performance on the field and decisions made during Ratcliffe's tenure.
Lineker stated, 'I look at Man United and I see problems coming down from the top. I must congratulate the Glazers on finding someone even worse than them that they can blame and getting him in there and getting all the stick: Jim Ratcliffe.' He further commented on the state of the club, describing it as a 'bit of a shambles' and criticizing the Glazers for deflecting blame onto Ratcliffe.
Since Ratcliffe's appointment, Manchester United has dismissed two permanent managers. Erik ten Hag was let go three months after receiving a new contract in October 2024, and his successor, Ruben Amorim, left in January 2026 after 14 months. Michael Carrick was later appointed as the permanent manager following a successful interim period but faced challenges in the transfer market.
As of the international break, Manchester United is positioned 12th in the league, having earned five points from five matches. Additionally, academy player JJ Gabriel, known as 'Kid Messi,' has requested to leave the club, citing concerns that it has fallen behind top European teams.
Ratcliffe has also faced backlash for staff redundancies and rising ticket prices, as well as plans to construct a new 100,000-seat stadium. Fans have protested against the club's ownership, calling for Ratcliffe's resignation following his comments on immigration.
Lineker remarked on the club's issues, stating, 'It is a bit of a mess, that club. You've got a ground that's falling apart, all sorts of complaints about various things.' He noted the loss of young talent and the inconsistency of results, suggesting that leadership issues may be contributing to the club's struggles.
Ratcliffe previously indicated that excessive criticism could lead him to step down, expressing that he could tolerate some backlash but would reconsider if faced with the level of abuse directed at the Glazer family. The Glazers acquired Manchester United in 2005 through a leveraged buyout and maintain a majority stake.
