G7 Foreign Ministers Call for Halt to Houthi Strikes on Saudi Arabia

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have condemned the ongoing strikes by Yemen’s Houthis against Saudi Arabia. The statement was issued on Monday following an informal meeting during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The ministers from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States expressed their condemnation of what they termed 'unacceptable continued strikes' by the Houthis. They urged the Houthis to 'immediately cease all military actions, all threats and attacks against civilian shipping, and to return to the political process in good faith.' Additionally, the G7 ministers called on Iran to stop arming and supporting the Houthis, citing violations of past UN Security Council resolutions. They indicated that Iran’s support for the Houthis represents a dangerous pattern of escalation that could undermine international trade and contribute to global instability. This recent escalation follows a period of relative calm that had been maintained since a UN-brokered ceasefire in 2022 between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.
