Lawmakers Demand Answers on Conditions in Florida ICE Facilities

MIRAMAR, Fla. — Democratic lawmakers are seeking clarification following a whistleblower report that describes conditions inside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in Florida, including one in Miramar, as severe. Representatives Robert Garcia, Bennie Thompson, and Maxwell Frost presented photographs from the report that depict unsanitary restrooms and detainees allegedly forced to sleep on concrete floors or in chains. The report claims that whistleblowers have indicated that ICE is detaining individuals, including men, women, families, and elderly persons with chronic medical conditions, for extended periods under abusive and potentially life-threatening conditions. These conditions reportedly include overcrowded cells, prolonged shackling, inadequate medical care and hygiene, insufficient food, and limited or no access to legal representation. Garcia, who is the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued a statement asserting that the Trump Administration is attempting to conceal these unsafe conditions and evade accountability, while endangering lives. He called for ICE to immediately cease what he described as inhumane treatment and provide answers regarding the situation. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz visited the Miramar facility in July and reported witnessing conditions she deemed unacceptable.
