TSA Discovers Knife Concealed in Baseball Bat-Shaped Flashlight at Florida Airport

<p>Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Tampa International Airport in Florida discovered a 4-inch double-edged knife concealed inside a baseball bat-shaped flashlight during a recent security screening. The incident occurred when TSA Officer Andrew Carter was using an X-ray machine to screen a passenger's carry-on bag and noticed something unusual about the flashlight, prompting him to flag the bag for further inspection.</p><p>Upon closer examination, Supervisory TSA Officer Michael Slaughter felt a mass beneath the flashlight's lining. After opening the lining, he found the flashlight and noticed a line along its shaft. "That is when it detached from the flashlight — revealing a 4-inch double-edged knife integrated into the handle," Slaughter stated.</p><p>When questioned, the passenger initially claimed he was unaware of the knife's presence in his bag. However, after airport police arrived, he admitted to placing it beneath the suitcase lining to save space, according to TSA. The passenger was subsequently arrested and prohibited from traveling.</p><p>Keith Jeffries, vice president of K2 Security Screening Group and a former federal security director for TSA at Los Angeles International Airport, noted that concealed blades are not uncommon at airport checkpoints. He mentioned that passengers sometimes unknowingly carry concealed blades in items they have purchased, such as walking canes.</p><p>In this case, however, the passenger's admission of intentionally concealing the knife raised significant concerns. Jeffries explained, "Once you do that, that falls right into the category of artful concealment — which leads to certainly a grave concern." TSA stated that passengers bringing knives to checkpoints may voluntarily surrender them and continue traveling, but law enforcement actions depend on the specific circumstances of each incident. Travelers could also face civil penalties, and TSA PreCheck members might lose access to the program.</p><p>Jeffries advised travelers to be aware of the contents of their luggage and to avoid attempting to test airport security protocols. "Pack your own bag, know what's in your bag and do not try to test the system," he emphasized. "Do not test the security system. You will lose."
