He emphasized his commitment to serving as governor of Illinois and confirmed his intention to run for re-election in November. When asked about a potential run for the Democratic nomination in 2028, Pritzker replied, "I honestly am focused on what’s best for the people of Illinois." The governor, who is a billionaire and heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, did not disclose the specific medication he is using or his current weight. During a speech in March 2026, he humorously referenced his weight loss, stating it puts the 'gov' in 'Wegovy.' Historically, several presidential candidates have lost weight before their campaigns, often without success. Pritzker mentioned that he has struggled with weight since childhood, recalling the death of his father from a heart attack when he was seven. To prevent a similar fate, he began walking regularly and eventually decided to use weight-loss medication after being diagnosed with diabetes. He noted that his doctor recommended GLP-1 medication, which he found effective. As a result of his experience, Illinois will start covering weight-loss drugs for state employees, which Pritzker believes will ultimately save taxpayer money by reducing obesity-related health issues.
