A review by Reuters found that Trump invoked Biden by name at least 890 times since January 1, across nearly 200 events and interviews, as well as around 190 posts on Truth Social. Biden, who has largely reduced his public appearances due to health issues, has become a frequent target for Trump regarding various issues such as inflation, immigration, and foreign policy. Trump has attributed blame to Biden over the economy at least 210 times, 168 times regarding immigration, and 138 times concerning foreign policy and national security. Trump also referenced Biden during significant events, including Melania Trump's movie premiere and the National Prayer Breakfast, with a peak of 16 mentions at the July NATO summit. Additionally, Trump has accused Biden of failing to address international crises, including those in Ukraine, Iran, Afghanistan, and China. Former Biden White House official Meghan Hays characterized Trump's focus on Biden as an obsession, stating, "Nine hundred mentions in less than a year isn’t governing, it’s an obsession." As Republicans approach the November 3 midterms, Trump’s criticisms of Biden come amid challenges for the party, particularly due to rising energy prices linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The national average for regular gasoline has increased to about $4.48 per gallon, up from $4.14 over Labor Day weekend. Polling indicates that Republicans may lose control of the House, with Democrats currently leading by 5 points in the generic congressional ballot. Despite Biden leaving office over a year ago, Trump has sought to shift blame for inflation onto him, stating on Truth Social, "I hope everyone realizes that price increases throughout America were caused by Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration, not by 'TRUMP.'" A Harvard CAPS/Harris survey indicated that 62 percent of respondents blame the current economic situation on Trump rather than Biden. Republican strategist Ryan Williams noted that Trump often needs a single opponent to deflect attention from his own challenges, while strategist Charlie Black cautioned that blaming predecessors is ineffective for incumbents, who must focus on their own records to support their party.
