Massachusetts Governor Proposes Home Visits for New Mothers

<p>The governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, has announced a new initiative to have nurses visit new mothers at home shortly after childbirth. This program aims to provide healthcare assessments and identify any additional support or resources that may be needed.</p><p>During an interview with Boston Public Radio, Healey stated, "Everybody in the state, when you have a baby, you’re going to have a home visit within days, weeks, and that will be an opportunity for a healthcare provider to make an assessment to see if you need some additional support and resources." This initiative is part of the state's expansion of the Welcome Family program.</p><p>Additionally, Healey proposed allocating $250,000 to the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Program for Moms, which offers mental health support to providers caring for pregnant and postpartum patients, as reported by Fox News.</p><p>The home visits will include screenings for depression and other mental health issues, aimed at identifying families who may require extra assistance.</p><p>Healey expressed her support for mothers facing mental health challenges, stating, "To every mom who has struggled with her mental health before, during or after pregnancy, I want you to know we see you — I see you," during a visit to Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.</p><p>While some individuals support the initiative, others have criticized it as "creepy" and an example of government overreach. One commenter remarked that doctors and pediatricians are capable of conducting necessary screenings without home visits.</p><p>Concerns have also been raised regarding the voluntary nature of the program, with some suggesting that it may not always remain optional. This initiative has reignited discussions about mental health services, particularly in light of the Lindsay Clancy case, which received significant media attention.</p><p>In January 2023, Clancy admitted to killing her three children in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home, claiming she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time. Her defense attorney argued that she was not criminally responsible due to her mental state. A mistrial was declared on September 4, 2026, after the jury was unable to reach a verdict.</p>
