Trump and Mayor Mamdani to Meet at Gracie Mansion Amid Policy Differences

<p>President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet on Monday at Gracie Mansion, exploring their working relationship despite ongoing disagreements over immigration and other policies.</p><p>Both leaders have exchanged criticisms while identifying potential areas for collaboration, particularly during a meeting in February at the Oval Office that focused on housing in New York. However, their policy disagreements persist, with Mamdani opposing Trump's immigration policies and Trump criticizing the mayor's agenda.</p><p>In April, Trump expressed discontent with Mamdani's leadership, stating, "Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance!" This comment followed a proposal by Governor Kathy Hochul, supported by Mamdani, to impose a new tax on second homes in New York City valued over $5 million.</p><p>Trump first met with Mamdani in November, suggesting that Mamdani could "surprise some conservative people" and stating, "The better he does, the happier I am." Their previous meeting in February was described as cordial, with Mamdani seeking Trump's backing for a significant housing initiative.</p><p>During his State of the Union address in February, Trump referred to Mamdani as the "new communist mayor of New York City" but acknowledged him as a "nice guy" despite their policy differences.</p><p>Mamdani has been advocating for a housing project that would require over $21 billion in federal grants to construct 12,000 affordable homes, along with parks, schools, health clinics, and union jobs.</p><p>Trump is visiting New York City this week for the United Nations General Assembly and will meet with Mamdani before returning to Washington on Wednesday, coinciding with a state visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping.</p><p>The two leaders have frequently clashed over immigration enforcement, particularly following a federal operation that resulted in over 2,100 arrests in New York. Mamdani's administration has also joined a coalition lawsuit against a new public-charge rule implemented by the Trump administration, which alters how immigration officials evaluate applicants' potential use of public benefits.</p><p>Mamdani stated at a recent news conference, "If you are a citizen, or an individual seeking humanitarian relief like asylum, these changes will not affect you."
