Trump and Mayor Mamdani to Meet at Gracie Mansion Amid Policy Differences

<p>President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet on Monday at Gracie Mansion, exploring their working relationship despite ongoing disagreements over immigration and other policy issues.</p><p>Both leaders have exchanged criticisms while identifying areas for collaboration, particularly during a meeting in February at the Oval Office that focused on housing in New York. However, they continue to have significant policy disagreements, with Mamdani opposing Trump's immigration policies and Trump criticizing the mayor's agenda.</p><p>In April, Trump criticized Mamdani's leadership, stating, "Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance!" This statement followed a proposal by Governor Kathy Hochul, supported by Mamdani, to impose a new tax on second homes in New York City valued at over $5 million.</p><p>Trump first met Mamdani last November and remarked that the mayor could "surprise some conservative people," adding, "The better he does, the happier I am." Their last meeting on February 26 was described as cordial, with Mamdani seeking Trump's support for a significant housing initiative despite their differences.</p><p>During his State of the Union address in February, Trump referred to Mamdani as the "new communist mayor of New York City" but acknowledged him as a "nice guy" despite their policy disagreements.</p><p>Mamdani has been advocating for a housing project that would require over $21 billion in federal grants to build 12,000 affordable homes, along with parks, schools, health clinics, and union jobs.</p><p>Trump's visit to New York City coincides with the United Nations General Assembly, and he is scheduled to meet with Mamdani before returning to Washington on Wednesday, when Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected for a state visit.</p><p>Trump and Mamdani have frequently clashed over immigration enforcement, particularly after ICE arrested over 2,100 individuals in New York during a recent operation named "Operation Rotten Apple."</p><p>Mamdani's administration has also joined a coalition lawsuit against a new public-charge rule implemented by the Trump administration that reversed Biden-era regulations regarding immigration assessments related to public benefits.</p><p>At a news conference last week, Mamdani stated, "If you are a citizen, or an individual seeking humanitarian relief like asylum, these changes will not affect you." He criticized the new public charge rule for creating uncertainty and fear among immigrant New Yorkers.</p><p>Mamdani is expected to address reporters following the meeting.
