European Intelligence Officials Warn of Potential Russian Aggression Against NATO

He remarked, “It’s still an open question if they have direct and concrete plans or if it’s just within the context of their overall attempts to spread fear and uncertainty in Western society.”</p><p>Any attack by Putin on a NATO member could have significant global repercussions, as NATO’s Article 5 stipulates that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all 32 members. Concerns have been raised that Putin may retaliate against NATO in response to perceived humiliations from Ukraine. Tusk stated, “The aim… will be to weaken NATO’s integrity in general and, above all, to convince… member states that Article 5 is more theoretical than practical.”</p><p>Additionally, it was reported that CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s secret visit to Moscow was intended to caution Russia against launching an unprovoked attack on NATO countries. The Kremlin confirmed that Ratcliffe met with Russian intelligence officials during his August visit but stated that he did not meet with Putin.</p><p>Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed claims of an impending attack on NATO as unfounded. On Saturday, Estonia’s foreign minister, Jonatan Vseviov, advised the public to remain calm and not to overreact to social media panic regarding a potential attack from Russia. He stated, “If there is reason to fear an attack, rest assured: we will make that clear. Until then, keep calm, carry on and support Ukraine.”</p><p>Mežviets expressed that it is prudent for Europe and the global community to remain vigilant regarding possible aggressive actions from Putin, noting that prior to 2022, warnings from Baltic and Polish officials were often overlooked. He concluded, “In 2022, the approach of our partners changed.
