Trial Begins for Ex-Husband and In-Laws of Hong Kong Socialite Abby Choi Accused of Murder

A murder trial commenced on Monday for Alex Kwong, the former husband of Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi, along with his father Kwong Kau and brother Anthony Kwong. The trial follows the discovery of parts of Choi's dismembered body more than three years ago, which drew significant attention in a city known for its low violent crime rates. The defendants are accused of killing Choi in February 2023 and face potential life imprisonment if convicted. They are also charged with preventing the lawful burial of a body. Choi, 28, was known for her glamorous lifestyle shared on Instagram, including her attendance at a Dior show shortly before her death. The courtroom saw a notable turnout, with many waiting outside to witness the proceedings, which were also broadcast live. During the hearing, all three defendants appeared calm, with Kwong Kau in a white T-shirt and his sons in suits. In 2023, police reported finding some of Choi's body parts in a unit located in Tai Po, a suburban area of Hong Kong, and later searched a landfill for further evidence. Choi had two children with Alex Kwong and had remarried after their divorce, having two additional children with her second husband. The prosecution is set to present its case at a later date, and the jury trial is expected to last 45 days.
