Elderly Man Returns 132-Year-Old Magazine to New Hampshire Library

An 84-year-old man returned a magazine to a New Hampshire library that had been checked out for over 130 years, avoiding a potential fine of $12,055 due to a fine freeze policy. The magazine, the September 1894 issue of "The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine," was returned by John Hanson, who had kept it at his home for decades. The Concord Public Library shared this story on social media, noting that the fine freeze allowed for the return of many overdue items, including this historic publication. The library stated that the magazine will not be placed back into circulation. Hanson expressed his motivation to return the magazine after reading about the library's fine freeze in the Concord Monitor, saying, "Yeah, when I saw that, I said to myself, ‘Boy, this would be a good time to bring it back.’"
