Ed Sheeran is facing backlash following the removal of Macklemore from his U.S. tour. An Irish radio station announced on Thursday that it would no longer play music by Ed Sheeran for the foreseeable future, citing listener feedback and the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal. Dave Kelly, group program director at Bay Broadcasting, which operates Classic Hits Radio, stated that the decision was carefully considered and not a personal judgment on Sheeran. He emphasized the importance of listening to their audience and supporting Irish artists. Kelly acknowledged Sheeran's explanation of the situation but noted the station's commitment to peace and respect.
The controversy began after Macklemore performed his song “Hind’s Hall,” which calls for a “Free Palestine,” during his opening act at MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5. Following this, he was removed from Sheeran's Loop Tour. Macklemore alleged that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft pressured Sheeran to drop him, threatening that he would not be allowed to perform at Gillette Stadium and encouraging other stadium owners to do the same.
After Macklemore's removal, four other supporting acts also withdrew from the tour, including Irish artists Aaron Rowe and Beoga, Lukas Graham, and Finneas. In addition to the radio station's decision, pro-Palestine groups Philly Palestine Coalition and Shut Down D&Z have organized a protest outside Sheeran's concert in Philadelphia, scheduled for September 19 at Lincoln Financial Field.
The protest flyer, shared on Instagram, calls for action and emphasizes the importance of Palestinian liberation. The groups criticized Sheeran for removing Macklemore from the tour, arguing that there is no neutrality against oppression.
Sheeran addressed the controversy on Instagram, stating that he is not complicit and has personal views on the conflict. He explained that venues communicated they would cancel shows if Macklemore remained on the tour, a stance based on how Macklemore conveyed his message during performances. Sheeran clarified that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter, not him, and expressed his desire to maintain a safe space for his audience, which includes young people.
Fox News Digital reached out to representatives for Ed Sheeran but did not receive an immediate response.
