An anonymous lottery player in Illinois has claimed the $1.04 billion Powerball jackpot after purchasing a single ticket. The Illinois State Lottery announced that the winner submitted their claim on Tuesday, more than a month after the winning numbers were drawn on August 12. The winning ticket was purchased at the Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh convenience store in Quincy, Illinois.
The winner opted for a Quick Pick and spent $2 on the ticket, which represents approximately 0.000000192% of the jackpot amount. In a statement, the winner expressed disbelief at the outcome, stating, "I never could have imagined that a $2 purchase would lead to a $1.04 billion jackpot. This is truly a blessing, and I’m incredibly grateful for this unexpected and extraordinary opportunity."
The winning numbers for the drawing were 4, 26, 66, 67, 69, and the red Powerball 9. The winner chose the one-time cash option, resulting in a payout of $450,500,000 before taxes. After federal withholding taxes of 24% and an additional 13%, the winner will receive approximately $283.8 million. The state of Illinois will also withhold $22.3 million due to its 4.95% tax on winnings.
The $1.04 billion jackpot is the largest Powerball prize of the year and the eighth largest in the game's history. Jon Marshall, the store manager, noted that many of their customers are regulars, and he expressed a desire to meet the winner. The retailer will receive a $500,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Illinois Lottery Director Harold Mays commented on the significance of the win, stating, "It’s exciting to see such a significant Powerball win come to an Illinois player, and we’re pleased to celebrate this milestone with them."
