Kemi Badenoch Initiates Legal Challenge Against Government Cuts Impacting Wandsworth Council Tax

Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party, has instructed lawyers to challenge government cuts that Wandsworth Council, which is run by the Conservatives, claims have led to a 94 percent increase in council tax. Badenoch described the tax increase as 'outrageous' and attributed it to a 40 percent reduction in funding from the Labour government. She stated, 'We have actually instructed lawyers, as the Conservative Party, to see if we can challenge the government on this decision.' Badenoch accused Labour of redistributing funds from areas that do not vote Labour to those that do, calling this practice unfair. She emphasized that the tax increase would negatively impact family budgets and criticized the Labour administration for what she described as a lack of equitable funding. Wandsworth Council announced the tax hike earlier this week, citing a £137 million financial gap inherited from the previous Labour administration. A recent spending review indicated that the council would need to raise council tax by over 230 percent to balance its budget if no immediate action is taken. Currently, residents pay £1,020 annually for Band D council tax, with the council's share set to increase significantly under the new plans, while the Mayor of London's portion remains unchanged.
