Polling Expert Analyzes GOP Prospects for Midterm Elections

Silver noted that the Republicans' inability to shift polling numbers after Labor Day may hinder their chances.</p><p>According to Silver, the Democrats currently hold an approximate 8.5-point lead over the Republicans, suggesting that a Republican recovery is becoming less likely as the election date approaches.</p><p>Silver stated, "To see Democrats up by eight and a half points—it can be eight or nine depending on how you round it—is consistent with what we thought," during an appearance on the <i>Still Counting</i> podcast.</p><p>As of mid-September, Democrats lead Republicans by 8.6 points in the generic congressional ballot, based on data from <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/state-of-the-union/generic-congressional-vote" rel="" target="_self" title="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/state-of-the-union/generic-congressional-vote">RealClearPolling</a>.</p><p>Silver expressed skepticism about the idea that Republican voter enthusiasm would increase as schools reopen, stating, "there’s not very many signs of that."</p><p>He highlighted findings from a recent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/09/15/polls/times-siena-poll-likely-voter-crosstabs.html" rel="" target="_self" title="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/09/15/polls/times-siena-poll-likely-voter-crosstabs.html">New York Times</a> poll indicating that Democratic supporters, particularly those who backed Kamala Harris in 2024, are more likely to participate in the midterms.
