Man Sentenced to 14 Months for Assaulting Representative Ilhan Omar

By Tim Sullivan MINNEAPOLIS — Anthony Kazmierczak, 56, was sentenced to 14 months in prison on Thursday for spraying vinegar at Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis. The sentencing follows a plea deal with prosecutors and comes nearly eight months after the incident on January 27. Kazmierczak will also serve three years of supervised release, which includes a prohibition on contact with Omar. U.S. marshals escorted him from the courtroom after the sentencing. U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen noted that Kazmierczak had planned the attack, as he had secured tickets to the town hall weeks in advance. "An attack on a public figure is not a political statement. It is misguided, selfish, and inconsistent with any concept of a free or democratic society," Ericksen stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the act. Kazmierczak, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, appeared visibly shaken during the proceedings. He expressed remorse, stating, "I really apologize to her for having put her through that," referring to Omar. His attorney argued that Kazmierczak's mental health issues contributed to his actions, as he had not been taking his medications prior to the incident. Witnesses reported that Kazmierczak jumped from the audience and sprayed a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar at Omar while accusing her of "splitting Minnesota apart." Omar was not harmed and continued the town hall after the arrest. Kazmierczak pleaded guilty to assaulting a U.S. officer. Prosecutors indicated that Kazmierczak had planned the attack, citing text messages he sent to acquaintances about his intentions for the meeting. The sentencing memorandum revealed his struggles with alcohol abuse and mental health issues, alongside health complications related to his Parkinson's diagnosis. Omar, a Somali refugee, has faced significant criticism and hostility, particularly from former President Donald Trump, who has made derogatory remarks about her since her election to Congress in 2019. Kazmierczak had previously expressed negative views about both Trump and President Joe Biden on social media, reflecting the tense political climate surrounding the incident.
