Former Arizona Senator Jon Kyl Passes Away After Dementia Diagnosis

PHOENIX — Jon Kyl, a former Republican congressman from Arizona, has died at the age of 81, months after announcing his dementia diagnosis. Kyl served in the U.S. House from 1987 to 1995 and in the Senate from 1995 to 2013, before withdrawing from public life in December 2022 due to his health condition. Born in Nebraska, Kyl earned his law degree from the University of Arizona and represented Arizona in Congress for nearly three decades, including a term as Senate minority whip. After leaving the Senate, Kyl joined the lobbying firm Covington and Burling. In 2018, he was appointed by then-Governor Doug Ducey to fill the vacancy left by the death of Senator John McCain, serving for several months before returning to his lobbying role. Kyl played a role in the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Following his passing, former Governor Doug Ducey and Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell expressed their condolences. Ducey described Kyl as a principled leader and mentor, while Mitchell highlighted his efforts to help victims of sex crimes. Secretary of State Adrian Fontes also offered condolences, noting Kyl's contributions to tribal water rights and public service.
